What is causing this pain in my mouth/jaw?

I have had really bad pain these last few days. It started off feeling like my wisdom teeth were moving, but the pain has moved. I get a throbbing pain in/under my tooth, and that side of the jaw then starts to hurt all the way up to my ear. Now my ear is throbbing and I have a massive headache. The pain isn’t really noticeable in the morning, but I have trouble falling asleep at night because it is so bad.

I woke up this morning feeling sick and now I am getting worried. At first I thought it was my wisdom teeth, then I thought it was possible a tooth problem, needing a root canal. But now I am getting worried. I feel ill. Please, should I go see a dentist or doctor?

The tooth in question doesnt really hurt when pressure is applied, but that whole side of my mouth (specifically my jaw bone) really hurts when I eat something cold.

You definitely have a tooth infection, an abscessed tooth. I’ve had a toothache several times before, and the symptoms you described match it exactly…a severe, stabbing pain that shoots up your jaw. It can also become a referenced pain that shoots all the way up to your ear. That was what happened to me one time with a really bad toothache.

You absolutely HAVE to go to a dentist ASAP. It will NOT get any better by itself. The nerve in your tooth is infected and it can spread. The pain will become excruciating and it will reach a point where nothing will work on the pain. When I’ve had a toothache, it was seriously the worst pain I ever felt in my life. You have to go to a dentist to get the infection treated. The dentist will give you antibiotics and a strong pain medication. Once the antibiotics start to work, the pain will ease up. Then you’re either going to have to get a root canal, or if the tooth is really bad, you might have to get it extracted.

But get to a dentist ASAP. This is an emergency, not only because of the unbearable pain but because the infection can get worse and spread. If you can’t go to a dentist or the dentist office is closed…go to the ER. I’m not joking. This is serious. They will give you antibiotics and pain medication.

What the other posters said about TMJ makes sense too – and really only a dentist can tell for sure. I just know that the symptoms you described sounded just like an infected tooth to me. Either way, you need to have it checked.

    you have an ear infection.
get a q-tip …and stick it in your ear…you would notice that your middle ear has pain…..search ‘middle ear infections’

you should feel the throbbing pain when you YAWN or open your mouth really wide

Honestly sounds like an abscessed tooth to me. Most abscesses are a sac of infection if you will under/beside the tooth and can cause some excruciating pain. You will probably be put on a dose of antibiotics for a week then a follow up appointment for a possible extraction or root canal.

I will be honest the only time I had a tooth that abscessed I had to have it pulled but that was actually okay as when my dentist pulled the tooth it was an instant relief.

It sounds like you have an abscessed tooth. But it could be TMJ problems. If you are grinding your teeth at night when you sleep then your jaw would be very sore when you wake up. It would also make your ear and head hurt as well as your teeth. It can cause sensitivity to cold also. Go see your dentist and have him take an xray of the area that is bothering you to see if you do have an abscess tooth or if it is you grinding your teeth. If you are grinding your teeth then you can have a night guard made to wear while you are sleeping. Good Luck and I hope that you feel better soon.
